Bar code scanners are available with all of the functionality onboard to scan a bar code and transfer the information directly to the PC screen at the point of the cursor.
In other words, you would do the task as usual and stop right at the moment when your next step would be to type in the data in the bar code.
Instead of typing the data, you will pull the trigger on the scanner, frame the bar code in the scanner's beam, and the data will appear quickly and accurately on the screen. You can even set it so the scanner causes the cursor to move to the next field on the screen.
